The Red Slaughter-Original Folk Songs & Irish Ballad Variations

The Red Slaughter

On the Hill of Tara, I saw the bold Ragnall, ready for battle, like his Father Olaf Cuaran the undefeated man

So I clenched my sword and I blessed my dear country men, with my brothers from the County Meath we took on the Norse army and the Hebrides

But we won our freedom, from the occupying hands, that plundered our towns, our Religion and our lands

The ‘red slaughter’ was quick, but cruel by all means, we took no prisoners the day that we buried their dreams

Were brothers of a clan and we stand together, any army of willing strong men

For the sake of our freedom the siege must be ended with a crushing blow to Ragnall’s head

In the Annals of the Masters, it is written the rivers ran red, with the blood of the Norsemen that we opened from their navals to their bloody chins

And it was decisive, for our Mothers were praying back home, to return victorious, like the men they had raised never to give in

‘til freedom is won, from the occupying hands, t
hat plundered our towns, our Religion and our lands

The ‘red slaughter’ was quick, but cruel by all means, we took no prisoners the day that we buried their dreams

We’re brothers of a clan, and we stand together, any army of willing strong men

For the sake of our freedom the siege must be ended with a crushing blow to Ragnall’s head
